Ball Protection
One of the biggest contributors to Georgia’s unexpected loss to Auburn was the three turnovers by Gunner Stockton. Two interceptions and a fumble late in the fourth quarter solidified the three-point loss to the Tigers, and it is something that the Dawgs cannot let the Gators capitalize on. Florida has shown they can capitalize on short fields, so giving them extra possessions could quickly swing momentum in a rivalry game where every possession matters. Protecting the football will not only keep points on the board for the Bulldogs, but also prevent Florida’s offense from gaining easy scoring opportunities.
Limit Florida Run game
Jadan Baughn is going to be dangerous for Georgia’s defense. Baugh is predicted to be a first-round pick in the NFL draft and has 13 touchdowns this season. Georgia needs to be prepared to stop him and limit their ability to run the ball. The Dawgs’ defense has shown some cracks and gaps when up against a physical offense, and this is something the Dawgs cannot afford to give up with Baugh. If Florida establishes a run game early, it forces Georgia’s linebackers and safeties to step closer to the line of scrimmage, opening up deep shots to the secondary that has been a point of controversy this season.
Win on Third Downs
The Dawgs need to make sure they continue to keep the chains moving against Florida. They struggled to convert on third downs against Auburn, converting six of 12. Despite Auburn only converting on six of 16, they were able to convert twice on fourth down, whereas the Dawgs had zero fourth-down conversion attempts. Not only do the Dawgs need to optimize on third downs on offense, but they need to be able to stop the Gators on third down. Allowing the Gators to continue to convert third downs can increase their time of possession and extend drives, which only give them more opportunities to score.
Clean Up Offensive Line
Georgia’s offensive line needs to give Gunner Stockton more time in the pocket and create consistent running lanes for the Bulldogs’ running backs. The offensive line struggled against Auburn, allowing Stockton to get sacked twice and constantly feel pressure from the Tiger linebackers. Against Florida, Georgia needs to establish control at the line of scrimmage and prevent the Gators’ defensive front from disrupting the offense. Also, allowing Stockton to have a clean pocket and time to find his receivers, while also having a strong run game, can be key to having a more successful and higher-scoring offense against the Gators.
Finish Drives
Georgia cannot afford to leave points on the board against Florida. The Dawgs need to turn promising possessions into scores instead of settling for field goals and even punts. Finishing drives successfully also means having good red zone ball protection and not giving Florida game-changing turnovers. The Bulldogs need to capitalize on opportunities when they reach Florida territory, forcing the Gators to play catch-up.
