Diamond Dawgs: WALK-OFF SWEEP!

Friday and Saturday, Slate Alford combined for three walk-offs in three games, and Ryan Black capped off the weekend with a walk-off two-run bomb.

Friday night, Alford put a grounder to the first baseman with the bases loaded and no outs, who then threw it wide of the catcher, trying to gun freshman pinch runner Erik Parker at the plate. The costly error allowed Parker to reach safely, and the Diamond Dawgs won the first game of the series 10-9.

Saturday, Alford’s walk-off wasn’t as dramatic as Friday’s or what would come later Saturday night. Rather, the junior infielder hit a sac fly in the bottom of the seventh as Brennan Hudson tagged and reached home to take the run rule 10-0 win in game two.

Alford’s walk-offs concluded with a late night ground ball stinger past the shortstop and into center in extra innings, giving Daniel Jackson the opportunity to reach home from second. After being down 6-0, the Bulldogs claimed another one-run, come-from-behind win, taking down FGCU 9-8.

Sunday afternoon the weather was immaculate and so was Ryan Black’s bat. Down 3-2 in the ninth, Tre Phelps reached base after being hit by a pitch. Enter UT Arlington transfer Black. With the sun glistening on the newly-renovated Foley Field, Black sent a shot to Kudzu Hill, plating Phelps and himself. Dawgs win, 4-3! Dawgs sweep!

The electric weekend finished up a five-game week where the Diamond Dawgs went 5-0 as they took down Georgia State on Wednesday night in Atlanta. The series sweep gets Georgia to a 10-game win streak and a No. 5 ranking in week three’s poll.

Despite the Diamond Dawgs’ dominance in the win column, it’s been a cardiac season for Georgia. The Bulldog bullpen has been fantastic, but Georgia’s starters gave up another 11 earned runs over the five-game week. Furthermore, only one starting pitcher for the Bulldogs has gone five full innings since the start of the 2025 season.

Last year’s roster was an offensive machine, and this year’s squad seems to have a lot of the same offensive firepower; however, in former pitching coach Wes Johnson’s second year, the pitching staff was aiming to be far improved. As the relievers dominate, Johnson and his staff must get some significant innings from their starters in order to compete with the stacked SEC field.

Offensively, Nolan McCarthy added his first Bulldog homer of his career to his résumé while Daniel Jackson (not the safety but the baseball player) raked a 465 ft. homerun with an exit velocity of 109 MPH. This offense is clicking.

Up next, Georgia plays host to High Point Tuesday afternoon, Georgia State Wednesday afternoon and Columbia for a three-game series! Get out to Foley!
