Georgia junior catcher Michael Curry has been selected by the San Diego Padres in the 16th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft Wednesday.
Curry, a 5-11, 212-pound native of Gainesville, Ga., has played in 171 games including 167 starts for the ninth-ranked Bulldogs and earned Second Team All-SEC honors in 2018. He led the team with a .322 batting average and 53 RBI plus hit 13 home runs in helping Georgia to a 39-21 record and an appearance in an NCAA Regional as a No. 8 national seed. He served as a co-captain for the second year in a row.
This past season, he started all 60 games including 56 as a designated hitter and four in right field. Curry had 24 multiple-hit games and 14 multiple-RBI games. In the 2018 NCAA Athens Regional, he led the squad with a .412 average, three doubles, three home runs and six RBI. In his career, Curry ranks eighth in school history with 34 home runs plus has 133 RBI and a .295 batting average. He has made 59 career starts at catcher too. An annual member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, Curry is majoring in Computer Science. In 2017 as a sophomore, he earned First Team All-SEC honors and received the Jason Varitek Award for being the Most Outstanding Scholar-Athlete in the state of Georgia from The Atlanta 400 Baseball Club.
