Quarterback Gunner Stockton ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more, leading No. 5 Georgia to a 45-7 victory over Marshall on Saturday at Sanford Stadium. The Bulldogs have now won 32 straight games “between the hedges.”

Just six minutes into the first quarter, sophomore running back Dwight Phillips Jr. scored the first touchdown of the season on a 17-yard run. Phillips also totaled 60 rushing yards.

Later in the quarter, junior wide receiver Zachariah Branch, a transfer from USC, caught a screen pass from Stockton and broke free for a 47-yard touchdown. Branch finished with a team-high 95 receiving yards.

Stockton added another touchdown on a 13-yard run in the first quarter and scored again in the second, putting Georgia ahead 24-0 at halftime.

“It was a different feeling being the one to start this time,” Stockton said. “It’s a dream come true.”

In the third quarter, Stockton connected with junior wide receiver London Humphreys for a touchdown that extended the lead to 37-0. Head coach Kirby Smart then replaced him with redshirt freshman Ryan Puglisi.

On his first drive, Puglisi found freshman tight end Elyiss Williams for a 23-yard touchdown — the first career score for both players — to push the lead to 45-0.

Georgia’s defense dominated as well, holding Marshall to 1.6 yards per play. Junior linebacker Raylen Wilson led the Bulldogs with seven tackles, including two of the team’s six tackles for loss.

Special teams contributed with a blocked punt by sophomore defensive back KJ Bolden, the first of his career.

“I didn’t overlook Marshall at all,” Bolden said. “SEC or not, we play every game the same.”

Marshall avoided a shutout when running back Joshon Barbie scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter against Georgia’s reserves.

“We need to continue to improve and be consistent,” Smart said. “Looking back on this game, there were definitely things we can do better all around.”

Georgia hosts Austin Peay next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Sanford Stadium.
