The SEC kicked off Week 1 with its usual mix of dominance, drama, and downright head-scratchers. Georgia looked every bit the heavyweight in Athens, while some league rivals showed cracks right out of the gate. From Alabama’s stumble to LSU’s statement and everything in between, here’s how the conference fared in opening week—graded simply as pass or fail.
Auburn 38, Baylor 24
Pass. New-look Auburn handled business against a Power Five opponent. Sure, Baylor isn’t what it once was, but winning by two scores on opening weekend means Hugh Freeze’s seat cools down a notch. At least for now.
Florida State 31, No. 8 Alabama 17
Fail. Losing the opener in primetime to the Noles is the stuff of nightmares for Alabama fans who still think Nick Saban left a loaded cupboard. Reality check: Bama isn’t Bama anymore.
Florida 55, Long Island 0
Pass. Cupcake devoured in three bites. Nothing to see here except Florida padding stats against an FCS opponent. Even Napier couldn’t mess this one up.
Georgia 45, Marshall 7
Pass. The Dawgs did what top-five programs are supposed to do in openers. They smothered Marshall early, rolled in backups late, and left with no drama. Kirby probably still found something to chew them out about.
LSU 17, No. 4 Clemson 10
Pass. That’s a national spotlight win against a top-five team. Brian Kelly keeps proving he can play the big boys tough. LSU just made the SEC’s playoff math a little more interesting.
Mississippi State 34, ULM 7
Pass. The Bulldogs showed competence, which after last year is worth celebrating. Not exactly a résumé builder, but not a stumble either.
Missouri 61, Central Arkansas 0
Pass. If you’re going to play an overmatched in-state team, at least flatten them. Mizzou did just that. Brady Cook barely broke a sweat.
Oklahoma 35, Illinois State 3
Pass. Welcome to the SEC, Sooners. They took care of business against an FCS squad, but we’ll need to see them against a real test before buying stock.
South Carolina 24, Vermont 16
Fail. Beating Vermont in football is like bragging about dunking on your little cousin. Barely scraping by? That’s a red flag. Gamecocks didn’t inspire confidence.
Tennessee 45, Syracuse 26
Pass. The Vols did what they had to, leaning on tempo and depth. Syracuse hung around a bit too long, but the end result was never in doubt.
Texas A&M 42, UTSA 24
Pass. A&M fans won’t love giving up 24 to a C-USA team, but at least they avoided embarrassment. Aggies showed some firepower on offense—something they’ve lacked.
Texas 7, No. 1 Ohio State 14
Fail. Moral victories don’t count in the SEC. The defense held Ohio State to 14, but seven points from Texas’ offense isn’t enough. Close doesn’t get you playoff invites.
Vanderbilt 45, Charlotte 3
Pass. Vandy took care of Charlotte like they should. Commodores aren’t suddenly contenders, but at least they didn’t trip in Week 1.
Ole Miss 63, Georgia State 7
Pass. Lane Kiffin doing Lane Kiffin things—running up the score and smiling while doing it. The Rebels flexed their offensive muscle, though this was essentially a glorified scrimmage.
