BSB: Troy Meets No. 5 UGA in Athens Tonight

Rylan Lujo

Southeastern Conference-leading Georgia, nationally ranked as high as No. 5 this week, returns to Foley Field Tuesday against Troy. First pitch is scheduled for 3:02 p.m. and be available on SECN+ and the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.

The Bulldogs (34-11, 15-6 SEC) went 4-3 on a recently completed seven-game road trip against ranked foes, including winning two SEC series. The Bulldogs are 24-7 at home. One of those losses came to Troy 6-5 in 12 innings on Feb. 25. The series with Troy is just 1-1. After Troy, the Bulldogs face Missouri (21-23, 4-17 SEC) starting Friday at 6 p.m. The Saturday game will start at 2 p.m. while Sunday’s contest is a noon start and be televised by the SEC Network.

After being on the road for three of its last four SEC weekends, the Bulldogs remain in first place by 0.5 games ahead of No. 7 Texas A&M (33-8, 14-6 SEC) and 1.5 games over No. 3 Texas (32-9, 13-7 SEC). Georgia is 9-3 in SEC road action and 6-3 in league play at Foley Field. The rest of the SEC slate features all Tigers, first Missouri and LSU here the next two weekends before finishing up the regular season at No. 6 Auburn.

Georgia Leads Nation In Home Runs And SEC In Batting Average

*Georgia leads the NCAA with 120 Home Runs and is second with a .612 Slugging Percentage while it is fourth in Scoring at 9.4 runs/game. The Bulldogs have an SEC-best .321 Batting Average that ranks 10th nationally. Also, Georgia has a .983 Fielding Percentage, which is 10th nationally.

*Junior C Daniel Jackson has a team-high 21 home runs (including three grand slams) followed by junior 3B Tre Phelps and seniors Brennan Hudson with 15 each while Michael O’Shaughnessy has 14. Senior Kolby Branch and sophomore Henry Allen each have 13 home runs. Branch batted .412 in the road series win over No. 17 Ole Miss.

*Georgia is averaging an NCAA-leading 2.67 Home Runs per Game (HR/G) in 2026. The 2025 squad averaged 2.40 HR/G while the 2024 team averaged 2.52 HR/G. The school record for home runs in a season is 151 by the 2024 team while last year’s squad finished second all-time with 144. Both of those teams played 60 games.

Jackson, Phelps and Lujo Headline Offense

*Junior C Daniel Jackson (.380-21-62, 21 SB) ranks in the top six nationally in Home Runs (21), Total Bases (142), RBI (62) and Runs Scored (61). He is on the Midseason Watch Lists for the Buster Posey Collegiate Catcher of the Year and the Golden Spikes Award. At #14 Arkansas, he tied a school record by hitting three home runs in a game. He hit .429 with seven RBI in the road series win over the Razorbacks to earn SEC Co-Player of the Week honors. He followed that up by hitting .400-1-3 plus 3 SB in a road series win over #17 Ole Miss.

*Junior 3B Tre Phelps (.361-15-41) leads the nation in Hit-By-Pitches (27) and is fifth in Runs Scored (60). Phelps is on the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List. Earlier this year, Jackson had a team-best 21-game hitting streak while Phelps carried one over from last year that stretched to 27, one game shy of the school record.

*Sophomore CF Rylan Lujo (.357-7-29) ranks second in the league with a .403 batting average in SEC games, and he’s got a .681 slugging percentage in SEC action too. In the SEC, Lujo is batting .403-5-17 while Jackson is .371-7-23 while Phelps is .318-3-10.

Jackson Joins Elite 20-20 Club

*Currently, there are only two players in NCAA Division 1 that have hit at least 20 home runs and have 20 stolen bases: Georgia catcher Daniel Jackson (21-21) and Farleigh Dickinson sophomore outfielder Hunter Ray (22-22).

*Jackson is the first catcher in SEC history to post a 20-20 season and just the sixth overall in the history of the league. Before Jackson, the last SEC player to register a 20-20 season was Arkansas outfielder Andrew Benintendi (20-24) in 2015 when he swept all the national honors including the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy.

Pitching Matchup

*Tuesday’s starters for both teams have not been announced. The Bulldogs own a 5.04 ERA with 474 strikeouts and 208 walks in 386 innings. Opponents are hitting .239 against them. This past Sunday at No. 17 Ole Miss, Georgia posted its seventh SEC win when it held an opponent to a pair of runs or less. Georgia split the first two games with the Rebels and allowed a combined 18 runs in those contests. Georgia and Troy will likely employ a staff afternoon on the mound.
