Bowers, a native of Napa, Calif., is Georgia’s first winner of the Mackey Award.

In addition, the following Bulldogs were named to the Walter Camp All-America Team during the show: First Team – junior defensive lineman Jalen Carter, senior safety Christopher Smith, and Second Team – Bowers.

Bowers is the team leader with 52 catches for 726 yards and six touchdowns.  He also has six carries for 93 yards and three scores.  In addition, Bowers has been a pivotal blocker for a Bulldog offense that averages 207 yards on the ground and has allowed only seven sacks to quarterback Stetson Bennett, including none in the last six games.

Bowers was an All-SEC First Team selection on Tuesday, was a Rotary Lombardi Award finalist and was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team.

WTENNIS: Meg Kowalski named college finalist for the 2023 Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup

University of Georgia women’s tennis graduate Meg Kowalski has been named a College Finalist for the 2023 Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup. The award is presented to six distinguished athletes from any sport – male/female high school, male/female intercollegiate, and male/female professional – who best display character, teamwork, and citizenship, the attributes Athletes for a Better World deem central to transforming individuals, sport, and society.

“I am honored to be named a finalist for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup,” said Kowalski. “It is a true privilege to be able to compete for the University of Georgia and I am excited to bring more glory to this institution by being in the running for such a prestigious award. Since the beginning of my time at UGA, I have been fortunate enough to be surrounded but such influential leaders within the athletic department that not only embody Coach Wooden’s pyramid values, but have truly instilled them within me. This honor is a true testament to what UGA Athletics is all about.”

Kowalski, since stepping onto campus, has been a model student-athlete on and off the court. In her five years on campus, she has tallied 84 career singles wins and 66 career doubles victories. Kowalski is a four-time SEC Community Service Team member, three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete, two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member, and has been named All-SEC twice. In 2018-19, she also earned ITA Southeast Region Rookie of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year honors.

In previous years, Kowalski has been a part of Serving for a Cause, to generate money to send local children at the Boys and Girls Club of Athens to summer camp, First Serve, an hour-long tennis clinic to introduce the community to the game of tennis, volunteered at Special Pops, a special needs tennis clinic, teaching tennis to those who attend the clinic, Food2Kids Snack Drive benefiting the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, distributed groceries to underprivileged Athens residents in a mobile pantry car drive, and “Giving Challenge” which encouraged Georgia students to donate toiletries for unhoused populations via Bigger Visions Community Shelter. In addition, Kowalski and other members of the Georgia women’s tennis team collect and distribute old tennis balls from practice and matches to the local animal shelters and clinics in the Athens area.
