No major wrecks, power outages in first phase of winter storm in Athens

As the freezing storm moved through the Athens area on early Sunday, the area was fortunate not to experience significant power outages, nor any major vehicle wrecks.

Although a second round of precipitation will make its way through the area later on Sunday, local law enforcement agencies reported a quiet time on the streets and rural roadways.

In the words of Oconee County Sheriff James Hale, it was “like a ghost town, but that’s what we were hoping for.”

The same situation occurred in Athens, where Athens-Clarke police Lt. Katie Jenkins said patrol units reported no major wrecks or emergencies.

Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Jason Tast said Sunday afternoon that there were no power lines down and no wrecks. People appeared to be cautious and staying off the roadways, according to Tast.

The same situation occurred in Madison County, but Public Works Supervisor Alan Lapczynski said he was being cautious about what might happen when a second round of storms comes through later Sunday. The temperatures, he noted, did not cooperate, and roads remain icy, with more to come.

Pickens County: 949 outages (about 5.1% of customers)

Dade County: 244 outages (2.6%)

Bartow County: 1,002 outages (2.1%)

DeKalb County: 1,434 outages (0.4%)

Gilmer County: 454 outages (2%)

Rockdale County: 792 outages (1.8%)

Rabun County: 916 outages (5.5%)

Gwinnett County: 894 outages (0.2%)
