Season Lookahead: Oklahoma in Athens Feels Like the First True Heavyweight Swing

By Greg Poole

Oklahoma visits Athens on September 26, and that’s when Georgia’s season gets real. This home game against the Sooners feels like a chance to build a playoff résumé, impress recruits, and see how both lines hold up under pressure.

Georgia should welcome this challenge. The roster is built for games like this. Kirby Smart loads up on defensive backs for a reason, and Georgia keeps bringing in huge offensive linemen for occasions like these. These games aren’t just part of the season—they define it.

The main question is whether Georgia can control the game on offense. Oklahoma is athletic enough to take advantage if Georgia gets stuck in obvious passing situations, so the Bulldogs need to stay ahead of the chains. Nate Frazier’s speed and Chauncey Bowens’ strength should both be factors, but the offensive line needs to do more than just hold its ground. If Georgia can run the ball well, Gunner Stockton can use the intermediate passing game and the tight ends to challenge Oklahoma’s linebackers. The best version of Georgia’s offense will be patient, physical and selective, taking the deep shot when it is there.

On defense, Georgia needs to prevent big plays. For Oklahoma to win in Athens, they’ll likely need quick touchdowns, good field position, or turnovers. Georgia’s secondary, with KJ Bolden, Ellis Robinson IV, Demello Jones, and a strong group of safeties, has the talent to handle it. The key will be communication. Oklahoma will challenge their awareness and discipline. Georgia must tackle well in open space and make Oklahoma work for every yard.

This game could stay close until late in the fourth quarter. Georgia’s advantages are playing at Sanford Stadium, having strong defensive depth, and relying on Peyton Woodring if the game comes down to a late kick. The Bulldogs might not pull away from Oklahoma, but they seem to have a slight edge.

Prediction: Georgia 27, Oklahoma 24.
