NIL Comes to UGA – Two Players Reported to Have NIL Deals

Georgia’s NIL bill goes into effect July 1 and at least one company is ready to sign a couple of UGA Athletes, according to the following report from 247Sports:

“On July 1, student-athletes in Georgia will be able to profit off their own name, image, and likeness. And a pair of Georgia football players are prepared to take advantage. According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Georgia alumn and Dawgs’ fan TJ Calloway, owner of men’s apparel brand Onward Reserve, plans to sign contracts with freshman quarterback Brock Vandagriff and junior placekicker Jack Podlesny. Track star Matthew Boling, golfer Trent Phillips, and baseball player Connor Tate are also expected to sign deals.”

Recruiting Rollercoaster Ride Resumes

Over the past few weeks, there has been plenty of drama for those who follow recruiting closely. Here is a little (completely biased) summary of relevant UGA football recruiting news for the rest of the fanbase.

  • A couple of highly ranked recruits decommitted recently. Losing a commitment from a nationally ranked player will generate headlines. UGA lost two is a day, and it was the timing that created widespread press attention. They will be re-recruited or replaced — next man up.
  • Much bigger recent news brings immediate help for Georgia’s crippled defensive backfield. Tykee Smith announced his transfer from WVU. Smith is enrolled at UGA now.
  • Derion Kendrick is transferring from Clemson. He is a two-year starter for Clemson and All-ACC.
  • Arik Gilbert has arrived from LSU as a wide receiver.

Cam Shepherd Enjoying Role With Augusta Greenjackets

Cam Shepherd

After his 2020 season was cut short due to COVID-19, Shepherd signed with the Atlanta Braves as an undrafted free agent. He spent the fall in Atlanta’s instructional league before being assigned to Augusta for the 2021 season.

“This isn’t Shepherd’s first exposure to SRP Park. Georgia played at SRP three times between 2018-2020, so he had some familiarity with the ballpark before calling it home in 2021.

“It’s been going pretty good. It’s pretty much as I expected,” he said. “I guess it’s a little bit different than college ball was with the fact that you’re not worrying about class or anything else. It’s different, but it makes it a little easier just worrying about coming to the field and playing baseball every day and I’m enjoying it so far.”
