Evolve, Embrace the Future + More Anonomous Advice

Anonymous remarks from college coaches are usually entertaining. For example, a recent article from AthlonSports Annual College Football Preview magazine included the following anonymous coach remarks:

“Offensively they’re sort of adrift. What are they trying to do? Last year it was really muddy, and I think a lot of that had to do with betting on Jamie Newman, losing him, and then adjusting to JT Daniels in-season.”

Adrift? Muddy? He thinks Jamie Newman’s sudden departure shortly before the opener might have affected the offense. Wow! This coach is on top of it, but he leaves out a couple of items in the QB timeline. I’m sure he meant to say, adjusting to D’Wan Mathis and adjusting to Stetson Bennett before adjusting to JT Daniels. But let’s not get hung up on details.

“What are they trying to do?” This is a lead-in to the real zingers in the next paragraph.

“I think it’s fair to say they know they need to evolve, but they haven’t found the right way to do it. Having consistency and a returning QB is a good start, but they can’t get too conservative.”

I don’t get the use of the word “evolve” in this sense. One sees that term often in today’s college sports discussions. Since Coach X is not suggesting that UGA devote 10,000 years – give or take – to change its offense. Let’s call this use case “football evolve.” Football-evolve refers to the employment of a high-performance, fast-paced, high-scoring spread-based, RPO-heavy offense, right? If I’m right about his veiled suggestion, Georgia is safe. They ran that offense last season. I think they’ll have it down by September.

“This is a roster better than anyone in the country except for Bama and maybe Clemson. They’re turning over most of their secondary and will probably be fine. They just have to embrace the future with their offense and they could win it all.”

Here we go again! “Embrace the future” Sounds great, no? Everyone wants the latest, right? Embrace the future has entered our vocabulary as a sidekick of “evolve,” and by evolve, I mean football-evolve. The good news for UGA fans is that Georgia’s offense is football-evolved.

Nice rep, Coach X.

Kirby Smart Declared Support for 12 Team Playoff Last year

Coach Smart addressed the CFB Playoff model at a joint presser conference with Cincinatti coach Luke Fickell on New Year’s eve 2020, BI’s Vance Leavy asked Smart and Fickell about the topic prior to the 2021 Peach Bowl:

Smart: “The outcomes should be decieded on the field…If we are going to do it, I would be much more in favor of saying, lets go to 12…” See the press conference clip below.

Kirby position has not changed in the interveneing months:

“I think a lot of this is going to boil down to strength of schedule,” Smart told Marty & McGee. “For a long time now we have been trying to build up our future strength of schedule, because it’s not the losses that are going to kill you; it’s not playing the best teams. We’ve tried to go out and schedule major Power 5s across our scheduling system all the way out with the hopes that this would give us the opportunity to go play some really good teams. And losses won’t kill you when you start talking about top 12. You’ve got to have a powerful schedule and go play good teams.”
