BSB: Georgia (#5) Meets High Point and Georgia State Mid-Week

Fifth-ranked Georgia begins another five-game week Tuesday when High Point visits followed by Georgia State Wednesday and then Columbia for a weekend series.

The Bulldogs (13-1), who are riding a 10-game winning streak, welcome the High Point Panthers (9-3) to Foley Field Tuesday at 3 p.m. On Wednesday at 3 p.m., Georgia faces Ga. State for the second time this year.

The Bulldogs are a consensus top 10 squad again this week as they are in year two of the Wes Johnson era. Last week, the Bulldogs defeated Georgia State 7-3 in Atlanta and then swept a four-game set from Florida Gulf Coast at Foley Field with four walk-offs (three courtesy of Slate Alford) including one via a run-rule. The series with FGCU began with a 10-9 contest followed by a 10-0 run-rule, a 9-8 win in 10 innings and concluded with a ninth inning two-run blast by Ryan Black for a 4-3 sweep. Georgia is 8-0 at Foley Field this year.

High Point was 8-1 when it arrived in Macon last Friday and went 1-2, splitting with Mercer and falling to Florida A&M. GSU (9-2) bounced back from its loss to the Bulldogs to sweep Alabama A&M. GSU faces Alabama State on Tuesday. Columbia (1-6) beat Kennesaw State on Opening Day in Kennesaw but has dropped six straight. They lost the next two to the Owls and then were swept in a four-game road series with No. 11 Oregon. This will be the first meeting with High Point and Columbia while Georgia holds a 50-9 edge over Ga. State.

Tues.: Zach Harris, RHP, Jr. (0-0, 6.75 ERA) vs. Cord Butler (1-1, 5.19 ERA), RHP, Sr.; Wed.: TBA vs. TBA

Harris learned the morning of Opening Day this year that he would start in place of junior Kolten Smith who was scratched due to back spasms. Harris opened the 2025 campaign by going 4.0 innings against Quinnipiac in Wilmington, N.C., and got a no decision, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts. His other start this year came at Ga. State, going 1.1 innings and surrendering three runs on three hits in a no decision.

Bulldogs Post Another 5-0 Week

Last week, Georgia went 5-0 by batting .312 with 12 home runs and a .451 OB%. The pitching staff posted a 4.30 ERA and registered 57 Ks and 24 BBs in 44 IP.  Offensively, Tre Phelps batted a team-best .556 (10-for-18) with six runs scored, two home runs and eight RBI. Ryland Zaborowski hit .444 (4-for-9) with a double, two home runs and three RBI plus drew six walks. Daniel Jackson smashed three home runs among his six hits in 16 at bats.

Nineteen different Bulldogs saw action on the mound with sophomore Jordan Stephens going 2-0 in only 1.2 innings while Brian Curley picked up his first win as Bulldog with four scoreless and hitless frames over two appearances with seven strikeouts.

For the year, the Bulldogs are batting .301 with a .544 SLG%, a .455 OB% plus are 22-for-25 in SB. The team’s leading hitters are Ryland Zaborowski (.452-4-18), Slate Alford (.347-3-20, 14 BB) and Robbie Burnett (.333-4-14, 14 BB, 8 SB).

The Starting Five

• Georgia wraps up its regular-season road slate on Tuesday when it ventures to South Carolina looking to sweep the season series. The Bulldogs bested the Gamecocks, 71-60, in Athens on Jan. 28.

• The Bulldogs are coming off impressive back-to-back wins. Georgia defeated No. 3/3 Florida, 88-83, last Tuesday in Athens before topping Texas in Austin, 83-67, on Saturday.

• Silas Demary Jr. was named SEC Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 23.5 ppg in wins over the Gators and Gamecocks, including a career-high 26 points against the Longhorns. Demary shot a combined 57.7 percent from the floor and 58.3 percent from 3-point range in those victories.

• Asa Newell, who has matched Anthony Edwards’ school record with four SEC Freshman of the Week honors, has scored in double figures in 26 games and has led Georgia offensively in 18 outings.

• Georgia has played 14 games against AP-ranked teams and eight versus AP top-10 squads this season, the most of any program in the nation. In fact, the Bulldogs have played eight of 16 games in 2025 against top-10 teams, with five of those being on the road.

The Opening Tip

Georgia looks to continue to build momentum from back-to-back wins last week when the Bulldogs face South Carolina at Colonial Life Arena on Tuesday. Georgia defeated No. 3/3 Florida and topped Texas in Austin to move to the better side of the NCAA Tournament “bubble” according to most prognosticators.

The Bulldogs are 18-11 overall and 6-10 in SEC play. As of Sunday, Georgia was included in 65 of 85 projections tracked by bracketmatrix.com, including the top spot in Joe Lunardi’s “last four in” for ESPN.com.

The Bulldogs’ balanced offense features seven players who have led Georgia in scoring in one or more games.

Freshman Asa Newell, a top-10 candidate for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award as the top center in college basketball, paces the Bulldogs both in scoring at 15.2 ppg and on the boards at 6.8 rpg. Among SEC leaders, Newell is No. 14 in scoring, No. 10 rebounding, No. 3 in offensive rebounds (3.2 orpg) and No. 6 in double-doubles (six). In addition, he entered the week at No. 2 in the league and No. 49 nationally in field goal percentage (.550).

Silas Demary Jr. also is scoring at double-digit pace of 12.9 ppg the Bulldogs – including 20.5 ppg over the last six games – and sports team-high averages of 3.1 apg, 1.7 spg and 31.1 mpg.

Blue Cain is contributing double figures in league play, upping his average of 8.2 ppg against non-conference competition by 2.1 ppg to 10.3 ppg versus SEC teams.

Scouting The Gamecocks

South Carolina is 12-17 overall and 2-14 in the SEC but has been extremely impressive at Colonial Life Arena.

The Gamecocks are coming off a 72-53 thumping of Arkansas last Saturday, their second consecutive home win following an 84-69 decision over Texas seven days earlier. South Carolina also owns a home victory over Clemson, which is currently ranked No. 11 in both the AP and coaches polls.

The Gamecocks’ home setbacks include: a three-point decision to then-No. 2 Auburn, a one-point loss to No. 5 Florida, an overtime defeat to No. 19 Mississippi State and a pair of four-point decisions to No. 13 Texas A&M and No. 19 Ole Miss.

Collin Murray-Boyles leads the Gamecocks  and is one of only two players – along with Auburn’s Johni Broome – ranked among the  SEC’s top-10 in both scoring and rebounding. He is No. 9 in scoring (16.8 ppg) and No. 3 in rebounding (8.4 rpg).

Jamarii Thomas also is scoring in double figures for South Carolina at 13.1 ppg and is delivering a team-high 3.1 apg.

Series History With S.C.

South Carolina leads the overall series with Georgia, 64-61.

The Bulldogs earned a 71-60 victory over the Gamecocks five weeks ago in Athens.

Asa Newell scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Georgia.

Dylan James also played a key role, scoring 10 points and grabbing five rebounds in what was then a season-high 21 minutes. He scored eight straight points in a span of 68 just seconds late in the first half to help Georgia push a five-point lead with 4:55 left in the period to 14 at the intermission.

The Bulldogs then led by double figures for all but 25 seconds of the second stanza.

In Georgia’s most recent trip to Columbia on Jan. 16 last season, Silas Demary Jr. scored 15 points to lead the Bulldogs in a 74-69 win, their first at Colonial Life Arena since 2016.

The Bulldogs rallied from a nine-point deficit with 14:05 remaining en route to victory. Georgia used a 19-3 surge to go up 58-51 with 6:37 left.

The Gamecocks made it a one-possession game four times in the closing minutes, but the Bulldogs connected 11 of their last 12 chances at the line over the final 4:19.

Last Time Out

Silas Demary Jr. poured in a career-high 26 points – his third 20-point output in the last six games – to lead Georgia in a wire-to-wire 83-67 win over Texas last Saturday.

The Bulldogs scored on a Blue Cain steal and layup 15 seconds into the game and never trailed. Georgia led 46-29 at halftime and expanded that margin to 27 points on three occasions, lastly at 65-38 with 13:3 remaining.

The Longhorns closed the gap to 74-60 with 3:29 left, but Demary Jr. calmly answered with a baseline jumper as the shot clock expired to take the wind out of Texas’ comeback attempt.

“Confidence spreads, it just does,” head coach Mike White said. “We’re doing a little bit more off the ball than we were. But for the most part, I just think it’s just collectively, these guys have bought into making simple plays, hitting singles, passing it better, holding seals better, playing off two feet, all the little things that lead to value in the basketball at a higher rate.”

Comparing The “Bubble” Teams

Joe Lunardi publishes daily updates on his projected NCAA Tournament field this time of year. The information includes 16 teams “on the bubble” – the last four byes, last four in, first four out and next four out.

Georgia has been fluttering on the right and wrong side of the bubble over the past several weeks. The Bulldogs’ 88-83 victories over No. 3/3 Florida and Texas last week propelled the Bulldogs from “next four out” to “last four in” status.

One thing that should work in Georgia’s favor in the tournament committee’s conversations is that every team that has defeated the Bulldogs is currently projected in the NCAA field by Lunardi. No other team on the bubble that can make that claim.

The NET rankings of the 11 losses for Georgia are – No. 1, No. 1, No. 4, No. 5, No. 6, No. 13, No. 22, No. 23, No. 28, No. 30 and No. 47. That’s an average of 16.4, which is considerably better than any other bubble team as outlined below.

The Bulldogs are the only bubble team without a loss to a team higher than 50 in the NET.

MBB: Silas Demary Jr. Honored as SEC Player of the Week

Georgia’s Silas Demary Jr., who averaged 23.5 points in victories over No. 3 Florida and at Texas last week, was selected as the SEC Player of the Week by the league office in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday.

After recording two 20-point outings in the first 64 games of his career with the Bulldogs, Demary Jr. notched back-to-back 20-point performances against the Gators and Longhorns.

The sophomore from Raleigh, N.C., scored 21 points in the Bulldogs’ upset over the Gators last Tuesday, Georgia’s highest ranked win in more than 20 years. Demary Jr. followed that with a career-high 26 points against the Longhorns on Saturday in Austin. He shot a combined 57.7 percent from the field and an even more impressive 58.3 percent from 3-point range in the victories.

Demary Jr. scored 10 points in the opening 5:31 to help Georgia race to a 20-6 lead over Florida. He posted 10 first-half points versus Texas, helping the Bulldogs build a 46-29 lead at the intermission.

Demary Jr. is the 20th Bulldog to win SEC Player of the Week honors since the award’s inception in 1985. Those players have combined to win 41 POTW certificates.

Georgia improved to 18-11 overall and 6-10 in the SEC with those wins. The Bulldogs have two regular-season games left, facing South Carolina on Tuesday before hosting Vanderbilt on Saturday. A limited number of tickets remain for the match with the Commodores and are available at www.georgiadogs.com/mbbtix.

WBB: Mia Woolfolk Earned Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week Honors

After leading her team to a pair of wins, including an upset victory at No. 11-ranked Tennessee on Sunday, Georgia women’s basketball rookie Mia Woolfolk has earned Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week honors.

Woolfolk was Georgia’s leading scorer in wins against Auburn and Tennessee. She tallied a career and game-high 20 points in Knoxville, giving the Lady Bulldogs their third win at UT since 1996 and the program’s first top-25 victory of the season.

The Midlothian, Virginia, native shot a remarkable 85.7 percent from the floor and 81 percent from the free-throw line in two games, knocking in 12 of 14 field goals this week. After leading Georgia with 17 points in the win against Auburn, she hit big shot after big shot against the Lady Vols. Down 62-60 with 2:23 remaining, Woolfolk tied the game with her jump shot, erasing Georgia’s final deficit of the game. She then knocked in five of six free throws in the final period, including a pair in the final seconds to seal the 72-69 win.

Woolfolk is part of Georgia’s talented freshman class that makes up 47 percent of the team’s scoring. The Lady Bulldogs are the only SEC squad to have a pair of true freshmen rank among their top three scorers, including leading scorer Trinity Turner. Turner is the first Georgia rookie to lead the team in scoring this late in the season since National Freshman of the Year Tasha Humphrey in 2004.
