BSB: Four Dawgs Earn All-SEC Honors

Slate Alford

The SEC announced Monday that Slate Alford, Robbie Burnett, Brian Curley and Ryland Zaborowski earned All-Southeastern Conference honors in a vote of the league’s baseball coaches.

Alford made the All-SEC first team at third base while Burnett (outfielder), Curley (pitcher) and Zaborowski (designated hitter/utility) were second team selections.

Alford, a 6-3, 212-pound native of Madison, Ala., has started all 56 games this season and owns a .329 batting average with 17 home runs and 59 RBI. He ranks among the top 10 in the league in numerous offensive categories. In SEC action, he hit a team-best 323-11-24.

Burnett, a 5-10, 191-pound senior outfielder/second baseman from Franklinton, N.C., is batting .318 with a team-leading 20 home runs, 66 RBI and 17 stolen bases. He has been named a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy, two of the nation’s most prestigious awards. Burnett has played in 53 games with 52 starts.

Curley, a 5-10, 212-pound junior pitcher from Midlothian, Va., began the year as a closer and made the move to the starting rotation. He has served as Georgia’s game one SEC starter for much of the season, going 4-3 with a 3.21 ERA and two saves in 16 appearances, including nine starts. He leads the nation in fewest hits allowed per nine innings at 4.96.

Zaborowski, a 6-5, 250-pound native of Gilbert, Ariz., leads the team with a .376 batting average plus has 16 home runs and 60 RBI in 41 games. He is a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy and was named a consensus midseason All-American. After missing nine games due to an elbow injury, the graduate returned to action this past Saturday, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in a series-clinching win over Texas A&M.

Georgia (42-14, 18-12 SEC), ranked as high as No. 3 this week in the national top 25 polls, will be the fifth seed in the SEC Baseball Tournament in Hoover, Ala. The Bulldogs will play their opening game on Wednesday at approximately 2 pm ET versus either Oklahoma (33-19) or Kentucky (29-23). The Bulldogs, now in their second season under Ike Cousins’ head baseball coach Wes Johnson, earned a first-round bye with their top-eight finish in league play.
