Georgia 27, Florida 8: Bulldogs’ Defense Supplies the Answer in Atlanta

The result was comfortable. Georgia’s offensive performance was considerably less convincing.

The Bulldogs managed only 101 passing yards, and Gunner Stockton completed 13 of 23 attempts without a touchdown. But Georgia controlled the line of scrimmage defensively, limiting Florida’s Jadan Baugh to 38 yards on 17 carries and recording 11 tackles for loss.
Florida’s problems began almost immediately.

Quarterback Aaron Philo, returning from a shoulder injury, threw an interception to Ellis Robinson IV on the Gators’ opening possession. Georgia failed to capitalize, but a roughing-the-punter penalty later extended another Bulldogs possession. Nate Frazier finished that opportunity with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Philo’s second interception, this one by Demello Jones, gave Georgia another short field. Peyton Woodring converted a 28-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead.

Georgia then put together its best sustained offensive possession of the half, moving 81 yards in 10 plays. Bo Walker scored from a yard out to make it 17-0 with 1:55 remaining.

The decisive play came before halftime.
Florida had replaced Philo with Tramell Jones Jr. and was finally moving the football when Quintavius Johnson pressured Jones from the blind side and forced a fumble. Chris Cole recovered and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown.

Instead of entering halftime with some momentum, Florida trailed 24-0.

Georgia’s defense continued to control the game after intermission. Braylon Conley intercepted Jones in the end zone during the third quarter, ending another Florida opportunity.

The offense struggled to produce much. Stockton never established a consistent rhythm, leaving Georgia dependent on its running game and the field position created by Florida’s mistakes.

The Gators finally scored with 6:59 remaining after recovering a Talyn Taylor fumble. Jones ran 2 yards for the touchdown, and Florida converted for two points.
Woodring answered with a 21-yard field goal, completing the scoring.

Georgia’s defense provided the response Kirby Smart needed after the Auburn loss. The Bulldogs protected their lead, disrupted Florida’s quarterbacks and prevented Baugh from becoming a factor.
Whether the offense made comparable progress is another question.

Georgia won convincingly, but Saturday demonstrated how much easier the game becomes when the defense supplies opportunities the offense cannot consistently create for itself.
