MLB Playoffs Underway As Hancock, Seattle Wait For Matchup

Former Georgia All-America pitcher Emerson Hancock and the rest of the Seattle Mariners are waiting to learn who they will face in the American League Division Series Saturday.
As the American League West champions and No. 2 seed, the Mariners will host Games 1 and 2 at T-Mobile Park against the winner of the Detroit Tigers-Cleveland Guardians Wild Card Series. The start time of Saturday’s game one will depend on the outcome of the Wild Card series between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. Game 2 of the ALDS in Seattle will be at 8:03 p.m. ET, with the remaining series times to be announced.
The 26-year-old Hancock posted a 4.90 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 64 strikeouts and 31 walks in 90 innings. He made 22 appearances, including 16 starts, in the majors this year with a 4-5 record. Currently, he’s on a 9.2 inning scoreless streak over his last five outings.
His last appearance of the regular season came in a spot start against the Colorado Rockies on Sept. 25. He provided four scoreless innings in a no-decision with seven strikeouts and no walks. https://www.mlb.com/video/emerson-hancock-strikes-out-seven-in-scoreless-start
It marked Hancock’s his first start since July 1, as he had been working out of the bullpen since rejoining the Mariners in September. He began the year in the Mariners rotation and spent time between the majors and Triple-A Tacoma. Last month, the Mariners announced that Hancock would end the season pitching out of the bullpen after they worked with him on his delivery, which featured a more near-sidearm slot. It produced an increase in his velocity and a more effective fastball, sinker and a sweeper.
Hancock, a 6-4, 213-pound native of Cairo, Ga., was Seattle’s first round draft pick in 2020 (6th overall selection). He made his MLB debut Aug. 9, 2023. He has made 37 career appearances for the Mariners, including 31 starts, with an 8-9 record and 4.81 ERA. The Mariners can wait until Saturday to set their playoff roster for the ALDS.
