Diamond Dawgs Dominance Translates to Omaha

OMAHA, NE – The Men’s College World Series is one of the pinnacles of college athletics. Vibrant fan bases, quirky superstitions and rowdy atmospheres always seem to make their way to the center of the country as titans of the sport clash at the renowned venue, and the start of this year’s tournament has proven no different.

Although the Bulldogs have fallen behind in the famed jello shot competition, the red hot team continued their perfect start to the 2026 postseason in their opening act in Omaha. Coming into the evening, it had been nearly a month since the last loss for the team; however, Georgia still entered the night as underdogs to the majority of the country due to their matchup against the six seeded Texas Longhorns. Facing arguably the best pitcher in the entire nation, the evening appeared to be a battle of “best on best” for both programs as the nation’s top offense faced one of the best pitching staffs in the entire country. However, the party started early for the Dawgs.

The Dawgs looked to their usual Friday starter in Joey Volchko to face the talented Texas lineup, but his counterpart was simply the talk of the town the entire day leading up to the showdown. National media, beat writers, and seasoned talking heads all hyped up the Longhorn starter Dylan Volantis. Volantis entered the evening hovering around a two run earned run average with an impressive repertoire of power and offspeed pitches, but everyone watching the game, in Omaha and afar, saw from the first pitch that Volchko would simply own this night.

Starting the first inning, Volchko struck out the side to get the high powered offense back in the dugout and ready to attack in the box. With a mix of his deceptive fastball and power slider, Volchko appeared to be simply unhittable to the Longhorn offense right from the start. It felt as if Volchko and Daniel Jackson could simply be the only two players on the field for the first three innings due to him retiring batters strictly by strike out or balls batted right back to the mound, but the dominance did not stop there.

Besides a singular unearned run allowed in the top of the fifth, Volchko pitched a near spotless complete game striking out 15 while only giving up four hits. His dominant outing earned him his 12th win of the season while also preventing the Dawgs from having to use any arms out of the bullpen.

On the offensive side, the Dawgs were relatively quiet compared to what fans are used to seeing back at Foley Field. Tre Phelps drew a leadoff walk against Volantis, and Rylan Lujo immediately made him pay for the poor command by homering to left two batters later. The early two run shot startled the Longhorns defensively as some defensive blunders led to the Dawgs sneaking two more runs across the board in the first. However, the early fireworks appeared to be all of them for the next stretch of innings as Volantis settled into the evening.

Besides another Lujo RBI double and a Kenny Ishikawa two RBI single in the seventh, that was all of the offensive firepower seen from the usually loud offensive, but this proved to be no issue with the dominant performance on the mound.

Heading into the winner’s bracket, Georgia faces another conference foe Monday evening in Oklahoma. The Sooners swiftly defeated Ole Miss Friday afternoon following a strong outing from Freshman Cord Rager. Outside of the Diamond Dawgs, the Sooners may be the next hottest team in the entire country as they have beaten the odds this postseason in winning a regional and super regional making their way to Omaha.

On the mound Monday night, Oklahoma is expected to start either another freshman in Xander Mercurius or more of their weekend starters, and Georgia will either go with Dylan Vigue or Caden Aoki. Both Vigue and Aoki have had solid outings this postseason, and many remember Aoki’s strong super regional performance in Athens. For the Sooners, Mercurius is a right handed pitcher who has pitched numerous times this postseason posting significant innings for the team as a true freshman.

Overall, Georgia looks to continue their undefeated postseason streak and get the bats further rolling in Omaha while these fans look to make a dent in the Jello shot lead on Monday night.
