Georgia wins early signing day again with another top 3 recruiting class

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is no stranger to recruiting at an elite level. He has consistently brought in top-five recruiting classes, which is a huge reason for Georgia making the College Football Playoff for the second time under Smart.

Wednesday was early signing day, which marked the first day that recruits could sign their letter of intent with their respective schools. Again, Georgia pulled in another solid class, currently ranked third nationally by both 247Sports and Rivals.

“I’m excited about this group. It’s been one of the funnest to recruit here,” said Smart on Wednesday. “It’s really a well-rounded class in terms of multiple-sport athletes, high academic achievers, top-ranked guys, which I don’t really care about what they’re ranked. I care a whole lot more about how they play, and we’ve seen evidence of the guys that have played a big role on our team, some of those guys were not the guys we talked about on this day during their career and I think we know a lot about those guys. It’s a lot more about what’s inside you that matters the most.”

The stud of this class does not come very far from Athens. Jefferson High School’s Malaki Starks is considered a five-star recruit by most and could potentially play multiple positions for Georgia.

“I think Malaki has a bright future,” said Smart. “He’s fast. Number one, he’s very intelligent. He’s high-character and you’re going to hear me repeat that over and over because that matters way more than what reputation they’re coming in with.”

The SEC continues to remain the premier conference in college football with Texas A&M and Alabama currently being the only two teams with their 2022 recruting class ranked above Georgia. This year’s class for Georgia was not stacked with offensive or defensive lineman, but defensive backs.

Georgia dipped into the transfer portal before this season to get Derion Kendrick and Tykee Smith to help out after the Bulldogs lost multiple key players at the position heading into the season. Even with the additions, Smart made it clear that you can never have too many defensive backs, especially with the way most offenses have revolutionized their passing games.

“The length and the speed is what stood out the most,” said Smart on the defensive backs signed in this class. “We missed some size in recent years. We like to have length; we like to have toughness. I like intelligence; I like ball skills. I think a lot of these qualities and traits show up. Your ability to play man-to-man—more in college football now than ever before, if you have a liability in coverage, it’s easier to find it.”

Some of the defensive backs that signed with UGA on Wednesday include five-star cornerbacks Jaheim Singletary and Daylen Everette, a former Clemson commit. The Bulldogs also got four-star cornerback Julian Humphrey and four-star safety JaCorey Thomas.

The quarterback situation for 2022 should be interesting with Rabun County’s Gunner Stockton also coming in. This year, Stockton broke Deshaun Watson’s record for most passing yards in Georgia high school football history. He also has thrown for the most touchdowns in GHSA history.

Georgia’s 2022 quarterback room could include JT Daniels, Stetson Bennett, Carson Beck, Brock Vandagriff and Stockton. Or it could include only a few of them. With the amount of talent in that room and the now vast use of the transfer portal, it would not be surprising to see one or two of those names look to play elsewhere.

Overall, it is a very solid 2022 class so far for Georgia, who signed 23 total players on Wednesday. National signing day is February 2, 2022, so the Bulldogs’ coaching staff will have until then to continue to sway recruits to Athens.
