What life lessons did you learn while at UGA?

The people I met while at UGA continue to be a big part of who I am in life. From my days at the Pi Kappa Phi house, to football weekends, road trips, lunch at Add Drug, front-right at the Georgia Theatre, Harry Bisset’s dinners, Spanky’s, nights spent downtown and afternoons on the porch at Son’s…..it’s not so much about what I learned in the classroom but the experiences that have shaped who I am.

What professor did you most admire?

I had a lot of great professors, but the most exceptional was the prolific Jere Morehead for Legal Studies.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Clearly, my children are my greatest achievement and the mark they are making on the world. They are my legacy!

Which historical figure do you most identify with?

Ronald Reagan, a man of action.

Who are your heroes in real life?

My Dad, Joe Powell, who was the epitome of what it means to have a servant’s heart and be a true gentleman. He started our family business 55 years ago and his lessons continue to guide who our family is each day. He and my mom were married for just at 64 years. We lost him this summer and his impact on our family will be felt for a lifetime.

Quotes to live by:

“There is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don’t care who gets the credit.”- Ronald Reagan

“Sic vos non vobis- Thus ye labor, but not for yourselves.”

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Time spent with my family and friends on a fall Saturday at our Powell Dawg Pound Tailgate at Legion Field and then heading into Sanford to cheer on the Dawgs. My guilty pleasure is being on a boat anywhere on the water.

What is your most marked characteristic?

My family and friends tell me that I can make everything fun and positive, even in tough times. I have a workhorse mentality and just know to get up and grind out the work to hopefully make things better for others.

What do you most value in your friends?

Loyalty and their ability to show me grace.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I need to slow down and enjoy life’s blessings a bit more.

Who are your favorite writers?

I’m not a big pleasure reader because I have to read so much for my work, but I do enjoy the meaning behind the written word of Thomas Carlyle. I also admire and respect the written and spoken word of our Pastor, Josh Smith, at Prince Avenue Baptist Church. And let’s not forget the stories told by our very own, Loran Smith.

Fave social media and who to follow?

I am not great with social media, and my kids manage my accounts. I’m not even sure who I follow these days!
