MTennis: UGA finished day one of the Georgia Tech Invitational while junior Miguel Perez Peña concluded play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Fall Championships

In Atlanta, Thomas Paulsell earned a new highest-ranked singles win with a straight-set victory over No. 46 Nemanja Malesevic in a 6-1, 6-3 result. This marks the second-ranked win of Paulsell’s career, previously beating No. 104 Siem Woldeab from Texas on March 1, 2022.

Play began in doubles at the Georgia Tech Invitational, where two pairs of Bulldog tandems picked up a win. Ryan Colby and Niels Ratiu defeated Thando Longwe-Smit and Rafael Marques Da-Silva of Liberty by an 8-6 score, moving to a team-best 7-2 record. Filipe Costa and Cyrus Mahjoob also picked up an 8-6 win against Edward Tymes and Maxwell Weir of Georgia State to earn their second victory together.

 

 

 

 

In singles action, Georgia had four of its six players win matches on day one, led by Paulsell. Freshmen Mahjoob and Parker Mariencheck also took their matches in straight sets, with Mahjoob defeating Jim Ji (Yale) 6-2, 6-2, while Mariencheck defeated Marshall Landry (Mississippi St.) by a 6-4, 6-4 result. Junior Ryan Colby rounded out the day for the Bulldogs, beating Eric Li (Yale) 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 to move to 6-4 in singles on the year. 

Perez Peña concluded play in the singles consolation draw at the ITA Fall National Championships in San Diego. The junior fell to Memphis’ Leo Raquin by a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) score in the consolation quarterfinals. Perez Peña moved into the consolation draw after falling to Michigan State’s No. 25 Ozan Baris, the No. 5-8 seed in the field, by a 6-1, 6-4 score. He now holds a 12-4 record on the season, going 1-2 at the event.

The team will return to action for day two of the Georgia Tech Invitational at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET.

WTennis: UGA is set to close out its fall schedule at the Torero Tennis Classic

Six Bulldogs in juniors Mai Nirundorn and Guillermina Grant, sophomores Anastasiia Lopata and Haley Gaudette, and freshmen Aysegul Mert and Tatum Buffington will all make the trip to the West Coast. Singles and doubles action will take place over three days of competition from Nov. 3-5. 

Friday’s action will begin with doubles play as two Bulldog pairings will compete in the eight-team bracket. The tandem of Grant and Mert will make its debut against Claudia De Las Heras and Jordyn McBride (San Diego) while Nirundorn and Lopata will face off against Catherine Gagnon and Dariya Detkovskaya (Washington).  

In singles play, the round of 32 will see four Bulldogs compete on the first day of action. Nirundorn will open up her first match against Anna Campana (Pepperdine) while Grant faces off against Erika Matsuda (Washington). Lopata will take on Melissa Sakar (Washington) while Mert wraps up the round of 32 with her match against Nikki Redelijk (Pepperdine).
