Kirby Smart’s team won its second SEC game of the year on Saturday and for the second week, Georgia made a big statement. The Bulldog defense put on a show, only allowing 142 total yards and only 62 rushing yards. During the post-game press conference with Smart, the head coach talked about the win and the defensive performance but humbly said it wasn’t his defense but Mel Tucker’s.

The head coach was quick to point out to the media and to give credit where credit was due, that Defensive Coordinator Mel Tucker was the one that had the defense under control. He mentioned the tremendous job Tucker does and how the adjustments they needed were made at halftime.

Yeah, that’s not my defense. Coach (Mel) Tucker does a tremendous job with that defense,” Smart said. “They play hard for coach Tucker. During halftime, I didn’t need to go over there and see the defensive players. They had it under control, and they were doing the adjustments. They were doing a really nice job, so give credit where credits due. The kids play hard. They bought into playing with toughness and practicing that way. I think we get the best look in the country from our scout team, because, number one, Stetson Bennett is over there, we have five scholarship offensive lineman over there, and we’ve got good back over there to practice against. It’s valuable and it pays off in games like today.”

Georgia’s defense proved to be a force once again on Saturday and continue to stop teams in their tracks. It’ll be interesting to see how the rest of SEC schedule plays out for the Bulldogs this season, but opponents and rivals better bring their “A-game” if they want to move the ball on this team.
