[su_spacer size=”20″] One week is down and done for UGA’s Fall Camp 2015 and we look to the 2nd week of practices. The position battles are sure to heat up as players compete against one another to be named to the starting line up on September 5th when the Dawgs kickoff against the Warhawks of the University of Louisiana-Monroe. We have already looked at the quarterbacks, running backs, offensive line, and the tight ends. Today, we finish up on the offensive side of the ball by looking at the wide receivers in UGA Fall Preview 2015.
[su_spacer size=”20″]
UGA Assistant Head Coach Bryan McClendon, who had been the Dawgs’ running backs’ coach from February 2009 to February 2015, has taken over coaching the wide receivers for 2015. A former WR for the Dawgs from 2002-2005, McClendan will look to apply his skills to the receivers that has seen him produce and coach up an outstanding group of backs the last 6 years.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Let’s take a look at the wide receivers that Coach McClendon will be working with for 2015:
[su_spacer size=”40″] [su_box title=” UGA 2015 Wide Receiver Corps Entering into Fall Camp ” box_color=”#050505″ title_color=”#ffffff”] [su_spacer size=”20″] [su_tabs] [su_tab title=”Seniors“][su_animate type=”fadeInUp”] PLAYER
26 Malcolm Mitchell (6-1, 195 lbs, Sr.)
86 Justin Scott-Wesley (5-11, 201 lbs, Sr.)
25 Ben Souther (6-2, 201 lbs, walk-on Sr.)
[/su_tab] [su_tab title=” Juniors “][su_animate type=”fadeInUp”] 24 Colter Creswell (6-3, 180 lbs, walk-on Jr.)
81 Reggie Davis (6-0, 170 lbs, Jr.)
80 Charlie Hegedus (6-2, 202 lbs, Jr.)
38 Clay Johnson (6-1, 170 lbs, walk-on Jr.)
9 Kenneth Towns (6-3, 202 lbs,walk-on Jr.)
[/su_animate] [/su_tab] [su_tab title=”Sophomores “][su_animate type=”fadeInUp”] 16 Isaiah McKenzie (5-8, 170 lbs, So.)
23 Shakenneth Williams (6-1, 199 lbs, So.)
[/su_animate] [/su_tab] [su_tab title=”Freshmen “] [su_animate type=”fadeInUp”] 82 Michael Chigbu (6-2, 216 lbs, Fr.)
80 Warren Coombs (6-3, 206 lbs, walk-on Fr.)
5 Terry Godwin (5-11, 174 lbs, Fr.)
29 Matt Price (6-0, 197 lbs, walk-on RdFr.)
2 Jayson Stanley (6-2, 204 lbs, Fr.)
25 Steven Van Tiflin (6-1, 201 lbs, walk-on RdFr.)
14 Shaquery Wilson (6-1, 190, Fr.)
[/su_animate] [/su_tab] [/su_tabs] [/su_box] [su_spacer size=”40″] Looking at the wide receivers on the Dawgs’ roster there are 3 seniors, 5 juniors, 2 sophomores, and 7 freshmen. Of those, 10 are on scholarship and 7 are walk-ons.
[su_spacer size=”40″] With a new Bulldawg Offensive Coordinator in Brian Schottenheimer, who was hired to replace departed Coach Mike Bobo (who is now the head coach at Colorado State), it will be interesting to see how the receivers are utilized.
[su_spacer size=”40″] From watching tape and research, it appears that the 3 main receiver positions will be labeled X, F, and Z with the X being the split end, Z being the flanker and the F position looks to be the slot receiver.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Going into Fall Camp, fifth year senior Malcolm Mitchell will likely hold on to his starting role at split end at the X receiver position, and I expect Justin Scott-Wesley to be the favorite to grab a spot opposite of Mitchell as long as he has recovered from having his knee scoped over the summer. However, junior Reggie Davis has had a good spring and summer as well as first week of practice; so, if JSW needs more time to get 100%, I expect him to make a strong claim for playing time.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Last year, freshman receiver Isaiah McKenzie made a lot of noise returning kicks and punts on special teams and was used sparingly on offense at receiver and some running plays designed to get him in open space. Although, not the biggest WR at 5-8 and 170 lbs, the Human Joystick has some giddy up and go and definitely some wiggle waggle. He is looking to compete to for more playing time at the F receiver position in the slot.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Isaiah Mckenzie || “The Human Joystick” || Ultimate Freshman Highlights 2014
[su_spacer size=”40″] McKenzie tweaked a hamstring muscle this past week in practice. It was not the same leg that he pulled and strained a hamstring in over the spring, but it has opened the door for incoming freshman Terry Godwin to get more reps. Godwin, so far, has been impressive in fall camp at receiver. UGA redshirt sophomore QB Brice Ramsey has stated he just seems to snatch the ball right out of the air. The freshman will push McKenzie for playing time out of the slot.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Junior Kenneth Towns looks to battle for playing time behind Mitchell, JSW, and Davis. He is another receiver that had a good spring and summer, but there are some other incoming freshmen receivers that could push to take Towns’ spot on the depth chart like Michael Chigbu and Jayson Stanley. At 6-2, 216 lbs, Michael Chigbu is a receiver fans should keep their eyes on. He had a great summer in the 7on7 work outs and is a physically imposing WR.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Jayson Stanly is coming off a knee injury where he suffered a torn ACL in the first high school game of his senior season last year in August, but nearly a year after the injury, he appears to be cutting and running on the rehabbed knee just fine.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Another receiver to keep an eye on who could see playing time this fall is junior Charlie Hegedus who transferred from N.C. State last summer and was redshirted for the 2014 season. At 6-2 and 202 lbs, he is a nice sized target.
[su_spacer size=”40″] A walk-on that Georgia fans should remember is freshman Warren Coombs. At 6-3 and 206 lbs, he is hard to miss. Coombs was a speedster and track star in high school and flew under the radar when it came to high school football recruiting. He can flat out fly though, and to go along with his size, he is an intriguing prospect. He is raw, however; so, I don’t expect him to necessarily make a huge impact as a freshman. Coombs might be the steal of the 2015 class though a couple of years down the road.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Here is my projected depth chart for the start of the 2015 season for the Georgia Bulldawgs at wide receiver:
