It has been a week of titles for the Georgia men’s tennis program, and Tuesday was no different. Following a win by Walker Duncan in the singles championship match Monday, the Bulldog tandem of Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski took home the doubles crown with two wins Tuesday at the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional.
Loeb and Zielinski battled past Florida’s duo of Andy Andrade and McClain Kessler in the semifinals, 6-3, 7-6 (5), before ousting the other Gator duo of Oliver Crawford and Chase Perez-Blanco, 6-4, 6-2, in the finals. The Bulldog pair will receive an automatic entry to join Duncan at the 2017 Oracle/ITA Fall National Championships, which will be held Nov. 1-5 in Palm Desert, Calif.
“Wow. What a week for our team,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “To be able to win both the singles and doubles draws and have three players in the semifinals of singles in a field this strong is a huge testament to our team. I am proud of Robert and Jan for their performance on Tuesday and look forward to watching them continue to improve with each match. It was a big week for our guys, and I am pleased with how we competed across the board.”
It was another successful week for the Bulldogs. In all, Georgia featured both the singles runner-up (Wayne Montgomery) and singles champion (Duncan) as well as the doubles champion (Loeb and Zielinski). The Bulldogs also had a trio of players — Duncan, Montgomery, and Zielinski — in three of the four singles semifinals spots.
