WOMEN’S TENNIS: Ellen Perez Advances at National Indoor

[su_spacer size=”20″] Sophomore Ellen Perez, the 29th-ranked player in the country, defeated Columbia’s Star Makarome in straight sets to advance to the round of 16 at the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Perez, who is seeded 4th in the singles bracket, took a 6-0, 7-5 decision over Marakome. She will next face Vanderbilt’s Frances Altick, No. 49 in the ITA rankings, for a place in the quarterfinal round. The match will start Friday at 9 a.m. Perez and Altick met in 2015, with the latter taking a 6-4, 6-1 contest.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Junior Caroline Brinson also competed on the day, falling to Vanderbilt’s Sydney Campbell. Campbell, ranked seventh nationally, won 6-1, 6-4. Brinson, 72nd-ranked by ITA, entered the tournament on a hot streak, taking the crown at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional two weeks ago. She will begin competition in the consolation bracket against Colorado’s Nuria Ormeno Ruiz.
