1. Game No. 2 1980-82 – Here we go into game No. 2 of the 2025 season. When the Bulldogs won three straight Southeastern Conference championships from 1980-1982, those unforgettable teams posted some memorable triumphs to make it 2-0. In 1980, coming off the thrilling 16-15 victory at Tennessee, Georgia put together one of the most complete performances of the season in a 42-0 rout of Texas A&M Between the Hedges. Freshman sensation Herschel Walker, in his Sanford Stadium debut, thrilled the red and black throng with a 76-yard touchdown dash, highlighting a three score, 145-yard performance on 21 carries. The following year, Georgia followed up a 44-0 demolition of Tennessee in the season opener with a 27-13 victory over the California Golden Bears. Then in 1982, four and a half days after the Dogs topped Clemson 13-7 on Labor Day Night in a matchup of college football’s last two national champions, Georgia beat Brigham Young 17-14. Herschel, with his hand still in a cast due to his broken thumb, went for over 100 yards and scored the tying touchdown. Sophomore All-American Kevin Butler capped an outstanding drive led by quarterback John Lastinger with a 44-yard field goal to give the Dogs a three point lead with 1:11 remaining. Ronnie Harris then sealed the victory with Georgia’s sixth interception of the game against BYU future Hall of Fame QB Steve Young, who, like Lastinger, was making his second start.
2. Game No. 2 CKKS – Under the watch of, as he’s affectionately known on the Bulldog Network airwaves with Kevin Butler and yours truly, Coach King Kirby Smart has guided Georgia to a 2-0 start in each of his previous nine seasons at the helm of his alma mater. The most memorable Game No. 2 was the 20-19 victory at Notre Dame in 2017, a victory that served as a rocket fuel launching point for the Kirby dynasty. Rodrigo Blankenship kicked the go-ahead field goal, Devan Bellamy and Lorenzo Carter teamed up for strip sacks, and Jake Fromm delivered in his first start at QB – highlighted by Terry Godwin’s unforgettable touchdown catch. The Georgia faithful took over Notre Dame stadium and Chicago, a red and black weekend that will never be forgotten.
3. 57 on NFL Rosters – Georgia has produced a slew of great players through the years, and that shows once again in the pros. With the NFL season getting underway this week, it should be noted that 57 Georgia players have made opening week rosters. Each NFL team has 53 spots. You can do the match, an entire NFL team, and then some, could be fielded with just Georgia players.
4. 20 Years 05 Champs – This season marks the 20th anniversary of the Bulldogs 2005 SEC Championship. The Bulldogs lost a pair of heartbreakers back-to-back against Florida and Auburn, but put the bloom back on the rose of the season with a 14-7 victory over the Jackets (Tim Jennings with the sealing pick), and 34-14 triumph over LSU in the SEC Championship Game. The Bulldogs special teams blocked a punt, D.J. Shockley and Sean Bailey hooked up for TD’s, and Jennings had a game-sealing pick six. It was Georgia’s second SEC title in a four year period under coach Mark Richt. A young assistant coached Georgia’s running backs – Kirby Smart.
5. Austin P then 8 straight – Once again the schedule sets up for two non conference games to both start and end the season, bookending a rigorous stretch of eight consecutive SEC contests. League play starts next week at Tennessee, as the Dogs hope to be 2-0 headed to Knoxville after Saturday’s date with the Governors.
