Urlando Named SEC Men’s Swimmer of the Week

Following a historic performance against Tennessee last Saturday, University of Georgia redshirt senior Luca Urlando was named Southeastern Conference Men’s Swimmer of the Week Tuesday afternoon, as announced by the league office.
Urlando helped lead No. 7 Georgia to a 155-144 road victory at No. 8 Tennessee, winning three events in impressive fashion. In the 200-yard butterfly, the Sacramento native set a new American, NCAA, U.S. Open, SEC, and Georgia school record in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:37.17, breaking the previous record of 1:37.35 set by Texas’ Jack Conger at the 2017 NCAA Championships, the longest-running men’s American Record (excluding the 1,000y freestyle).
Urlando now holds the American Records in both the 200y butterfly and 100y backstroke, setting that mark at the 2022 NCAA Championships. Georgia holds three American short-course yard records, including Urlando’s two and Chase Kalisz’s 3:33.42 in the 400y IM from 2017.
Later in the meet, Urlando broke his own school record in the 100y butterfly with a school record time of 43.62, besting the previous top mark of 43.80 he set at the 2022 NCAAs. He also took first in the 200y IM with a winning time of 1:41.86 and helped the 200y medley relay post a season-best time of 1:24.00, the 10th-fastest mark in program history.
With Tuesday’s honor, Urlando has now been named SEC Swimmer of the Week five times during his Georgia career.
Urlando and the Bulldogs close out their dual season this Saturday against Emory at 11 a.m. at Bauerle Pool at Gabrielsen Natatorium. Prior to the meet, Urlando and 22 fellow seniors will be recognized in the annual Senior Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Admission is free for all spectators and the meet will stream live on SEC Network+.
