MBB: Dawgs Get Back in the Win Column against South Carolina

The Dawgs returned to Stegeman Coliseum to face off against the South Carolina Gamecocks. Georgia entered the matchup 2-8 in their last 10 meetings with South Carolina. Also, with four consecutive loses hanging over their heads, Georgia knew this had to be a rebound game. Fortunately for Dawgs fans, they secured a 71-60 victory to move to 12-1 at home and 15-6 on the season.

Asa Newell got the scoring off to a hot start as he contributed to six of the first 14 points for the Dawgs. He later finished the game with 17 points and 10 rebounds, collecting his fifth double-double of the season. South Carolina pulled the game to within 2 points midway through the half, but suddenly off the bench, Dylan James became the spark for the dawgs. He scored 8 points to close out the half and Georgia extended the lead to 14.

Georgia controlled the second half, protecting the lead and stretching it to 16 points with five minutes left in regulation. With a much-improved performance than the last outing against Florida, the Dawgs picked up a much-needed win. Georgia turned it around against the Gamecocks, cutting their turnovers by six and shooting a phenomenal 15% better from the field.

For Mike White and the Dawgs, it was crucial getting back into the win column against an SEC opponent. Against the Gamecocks, White once again showed the depth of the team, as the Dawgs finished with four double digit scorers – Godfrey, Leffew, Demary, and James. The team also showed resilience on the defensive side of the ball forcing 17 turnovers and guarding the three-point line well. This defensive effort will be needed against Alabama Saturday as the Crimson Tide score nearly 90 points a game on 47% shooting.

Georgia is still projected to make the tournament as a 10th seed. That line could very well change as six of their next seven games come against ranked opponents, this position is anything but secure. How well they navigate these upcoming games will determine their postseason fate. If they can continue to take care of the basketball early in the game and efficiently shoot from the field, the Dawgs have a chance to climb the rankings.
