BSB: Georgia Hosts East Tennessee State Today

Fourth-ranked Georgia, riding a 15-game winning streak, plays host to East Tennessee State Tuesday at Foley Field. First pitch will be at 3:02 p.m.

 

 

 

 

The Bulldogs (18-1) are batting .321 with a 4.28 ERA and a .979 fielding percentage. ETSU (12-3) owns a .334 batting average, a 3.38 ERA and a .972 fielding percentage. 

UGA-ETSU Probable Pitching Matchup
Tuesday: JT Quinn, RHP, Jr. (0-0, 2.57 ERA) vs. Tristan Curless, LHP/DH, Sr. (0-0, 7.50 ERA; .286-1-4) 
Quinn will be making his fourth start and fifth appearance overall for the Bulldogs this season. He has pitched a total of seven innings with nine strikeouts and four walks. He has gone two scoreless innings in each of his last two starts, both on pitch counts. Curless will be making his third start with six total innings pitched in 2025.

Georgia and ETSU rank second and third nationally in home runs behind Tennessee. The Volunteers have hit 49 while Georgia has 45 and the Buccaneers are next with 37. The Bulldogs swept a weekend series from Columbia while ETSU captured a series over ACC-member Pittsburgh. The Bulldogs, now in their second season under Ike Cousins head coach Wes Johnson, are a consensus top 10 team in this week’s top 25 polls including No. 3 by Perfect Game and No. 4 by D1Baseball.com.

Georgia’s Ryland Zaborowski (.447-10-36) earned SEC Co-Player of the Week honors, the league announced Monday. The graduate leads the nation with a 1.170 Slugging Percentage and ranks second in home runs and RBI. In four games last week, he batted .438 with six home runs and 18 RBI. His roommate, senior Robbie Burnett, is enjoying a fine start this season as well, batting .375-9-27. ETSU is led at the plate by junior Grant Gallagher (.372-9-13) and redshirt senior JD Yakubinis (.358-2-12).

On Deck
After the ETSU contest, Georgia opens SEC play Friday by playing host to No. 23 Kentucky (12-2). The Wildcats boast one of the nation’s top pitching staffs with a 1.88 ERA. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

MBB: Asa Newell has been named to the SEC’s All-Freshman Team

Georgia’s Asa Newell has been named to the SEC’s All-Freshman Team in balloting of league coaches. The conference office announced the men’s basketball awards on Monday afternoon.

Newell, a 6-11, 220-pound forward from Destin, Fla., has started all 31 games for Georgia this season, notching 28 double-figure scoring outputs including four 20-point performances. He also has six double-digit rebound outings and six double-doubles. Newell has led Georgia offensively 19 times and on the boards in 14 games.

Newell leads the Bulldogs in both scoring and (15.1 ppg) and rebounding (6.5 rpg). Among SEC leaders, he is No. 16 in scoring, No. 13 in rebounding, No. 3 in field goal percentage and No. 3 in offensive rebounds per game.

Newell was named SEC Freshman of the Week four times, matching Anthony Edwards for the most FOTW certificates by a Bulldog. He is the 15th Georgia player to earn SEC All-Freshman honors since the award’s inception in 1987, including current teammate Silas Demary Jr.

Georgia finished the regular season with a 20-11 record, just the sixth time in 119 seasons that the Bulldogs reached the 20-win mark during the regular season. Georgia will open play in the SEC Tournament on Wednesday when it faces Oklahoma at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET.

Ryland Zaborowski Named SEC Co-Player of the Week

Georgia’s Ryland Zaborowski has been named the Southeastern Conference Baseball Co-Player of the Week; the league announced Monday.

Zaborowski, a 6-5, 250-pound graduate infielder from Gilbert, Ariz., batted .438 with one double, six home runs and 18 RBI in four games last week. In the series sweep of Columbia, he had back-to-back games with two home runs and seven RBI. Currently, he leads the nation with a 1.170 Slugging Percentage and ranks second in home runs (10) and RBI (36) while batting .447 in 16 games. He shared the SEC honor with Arkansas’ Wehiwa Aloy.


In related baseball news Monday morning, Georgia climbed to No. 4 in the D1Baseball.com weekly top 25 poll and is No. 7 according to Baseball America. The Bulldogs remained at No. 3 in the Perfect Game Top 25 poll. The Bulldogs have won 15 straight games which is the second longest streak in school history, trailing only the 1908 team that won all 20 it played that year to win the Southern Championship.
