Georgia downed Oklahoma 41-13 for its 52nd consecutive victory against an unranked opponent. The Bulldogs are now 2-0 against the Sooners all time. Members of the 2018 Rose Bowl team: Sony Michel, Jake Fromm and Lorenzo Carter were in attendance. The outcome, however, was different. There was no last-minute house call to win the game. The Bulldogs initiated complete domination from the start with a 28-0 lead at halftime.
The striped Sanford crowd brought the energy for one of Georgia’s best home games on the schedule. Even though Oklahoma did not end up being the team we thought, we knew Dawg Nation would bring the energy for their team. After the game, Kirby Smart said he was excited for the turnout and the atmosphere.
In the absence of Nate Frazier, Dwight Phillips Jr. and Chauncey Bowens led the way for the Dawgs in the backfield with a career-high 84 rushing yards. He had arguably the best moment of his collegiate career when he broke away for a 54-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. As for Bowens, he found the end zone twice on just nine carries. While we think Frazier is one of the most talented running backs in the nation, Phillips Jr. and Bowens provide incredible depth for the ground game.
“We gotta get Peanut more touches,” coach Smart said.
Talyn Taylor also had a career day for the Bulldogs with four receptions, 110 receiving yards and a 35-yard touchdown. He continues to break out as a player, bringing explosive play ability as a sophomore.
Totaling four turnovers on the day, the defense was the star of the show. Chris Cole took one of his two fumble recoveries back for a touchdown, igniting the Sanford crowd. John Mateer had no answers for the Junkyard Dawgs. He fumbled twice, was sacked three times and threw an interception to KJ Bolden.
“The Sooners in a lot of ways beat the Sooners,” coach Smart said.
This week, Georgia welcomes former quarterback commit Jared Curtis and the Vanderbilt Commodores to Athens. Curtis was committed to the Bulldogs for seven months, before flipping to Vanderbilt the day before signing day. We certainly expect Georgia fans to give Curtis a warm welcome when he makes his way on the field.
Hot Take of the Week:
Georgia shuts out Vanderbilt. We feel like the Georgia defense has returned to the standard it expects and will make Curtis’s arrival to Athens one to forget for the Commodores. Vandy is 0-1 in conference play, putting up only 15 points against Auburn at Jordan-Hare, so there’s no reason to believe Smart’s defense cannot keep them off the scoreboard for 60 minutes.
