Very informative Bob.   It seems that what is needed is a uniform NCAA rule.  If graduates can transfer without sitting a year according to the NCAA, then it should apply to all conferences and teams IMO.

Bulldawg36  10-4 BD36. Appreciate you spending time with us as always. Rest well my friend.

freddawg DawgLink No problem and you are most welcome. It is a good discussion and made me look at the rule again just to make sure. And I may not be 100% correct on the whole rule, specifically on the appeal part.

But aye. That is a good assumption. The pressure shifts from Bama to the SEC now, but the Tide still got  their nose bloodied on this one.

Here is a quote from an earlier article that may help clear things up as far as why Chris Black was granted a waiver and his transfer was so easy compared to Maurice Smiths who hasn’t been granted  a waiver … as of yet:

“The student-athlete [Black] elected to have surgery in the middle of the season and left the program. Because of the timing of his departure, his scholarship was not renewed, and he requested to use the graduate transfer exception through the SEC. Our decision in this situation to support the SEC waiver was the exception and not the rule.

“We adhere to the SEC and institutional policies regarding issues of this manner. Waivers are not provided without compelling circumstances that present clear non-athletics reasons for the transfer. We remain happy to assist Maurice to enable a transfer to any non-SEC school, and have been doing everything requested regarding that throughout this process.”

Thanks Bob.  From the sound of that, the pressure shifts from Saban to the SEC office to explain why they are would block a graduate transfer.

  5. Bulldawg Bob2

freddawg Maurice Smith has appealed to be granted for a waiver, but I don’t know for sure if he has received an answer yet. If I am not mistaken, per the conference rules that govern student-athletes, he is allowed to submit a 2nd appeal if he is denied the first time.  But I would have to comb through the rules to know for sure.

  6. freddawg

Bulldawg Bob2 freddawg That’s interesting.  I wonder why the SEC would give him a waiver to play this year but not Smith.

  7. freddawg

DawgLink The article says he’s a 5th year senior.  I don’t know if the article is correct.

  8. Bulldawg Bob2

freddawg The SEC does have a grad-transfer rule.

The reason Chris Black is eligible to play is because he got a release from Bama in addition to a waiver from the SEC to be able to do so.

According to the article I linked below Chris Black will be a 5th year senior at UM this year.  They say in the article that he can play immediately.

  10. DawgLink

    Freddawg
SEC allows inter transfers but said student has to sit out a year. M Smith only has 1 year of eligibility left so he can’t sit out because it goes towards his eligibility

  11. Bulldawg Bob2

freddawg DawgLink  The SEC has a conference rule that does not prohibit intra-conference grad transfers.

While graduates can transfer to an intra-conference school, the SEC does stipulate that they have to have 2 years of eligibility left in order to play immediately. In other words, if they have only 1 year of eligibility, like Maurice Smith, they have to sit one year unless granted a waiver on appeal.

Any student-athlete that plays college football and is on scholarship has to get a release from the school and coach that they are currently on scholarship with, even if they have graduated, before they can transfer.

I may be wrong, but I don’t think the league has a rule against graduate transfers.   The reason I say that, is because Chris Black transferred to Missouri from Alabama back in Feb 2016.   He’s eligible to play this season.

Maybe Smith tried to get the SEC to overrule Alabama in his case and SEC refused?

  13. Bulldawg Bob2

DawgLink He has already appealed to the SEC to get a waiver, but I think it was denied. I could be wrong though.

  14. freddawg

DawgLink Not an answer to your question, but does the SEC specifically prohibit intra-conference grad transfers?  Or does the league allow teams to use their discretion whether to allow the transfer?

  15. DawgLink

    Hypothetically speaking here:
M Smith gets waiver from SEC, decides UGA is the place, comes in late for 2016. How does he make up for the lost practices and be game ready at the Dome? Does he play? I’m pretty sure CKS will take him

DawgLink I was just about to post that! I’m surprised; will wonders never cease. I hope the SEC lets Smith go. He still has to get that clearance.

  18. DawgLink

Just saw where Nick had a change of face and dropped his refusal for Maurice Smith to transfer in the SEC

Some pictures from practice today from Greg Poole . He’ll have the gallery up in the AM with some more information from practice.

UGA alumni prefer day games so they have time for the early bird specials at the local dinner on their way home after the game.
