    It’s after midnight, I’ll be lurking for a little while longer as I finish up some projects. Greg Poole will be on in a few hours later on this morning with more photos as well as more updates from Wednesday’s practice.

    The SEC released a statement to AL.com regarding the Maurice Smith transfer situation:

     ” The SEC won’t comment publicly on the situation, but released a statement to AL.com.
    ‘ As part of the SEC waiver process, a due diligence procedure ensures that pertinent information from the involved parties is gathered.  This information is gathered for the purpose of a thoughtful and appropriate consideration of the particular facts associated with each case.  The intent is for the waiver process to be handled in an efficient but deliberate manner, so the timeline for resolution of a waiver request varies with each unique situation.’

    ‘The SEC does not provide waivers of SEC rules absent circumstances that demonstrate a clear reason for granting an exception to those rules.  Each waiver request is reviewed on a case by case basis.’ ”

    RumRunnerDoogie  Awesome! I haven’t gotten to watch much of the Olympics the last couple of days, but I enjoy hearing the updates on here and on Twitter.

    RumRunnerDoogie Yep. Really expected him to be a big-time player for Georgia this year as a starter at ILB.  That means that front 7 is really a young group to start the season.

    freddawg JaxDawg  Aye. But Tim Kimbrough was the team’s leading returning tackler and most experienced linebacker and inside linebacker.

    I really expected him to be one of the starters. 

    But you are right. There is a good talent there at the ILB spot with R. Carter, N. Patrick, and R. Smith, and both freshman Jaleel Laguins and sophomore Juwan Taylor have experience playing ILB from high school.

    There is also Ryne Rankin that I see you listed, but he has mainly been a special teamer.

    JaxDawg We have enough depth to cover inside LB’er, if you include some guys who can move inside.  The quality is suspect, though. 

    ILB’ers:  Patrick, Smith, Carter, Rankin, Laguins, Taylor.

    OLB’ers who might move: Amaechi, McGee, O’Neal, Brown, Manac, 

    I’ve seen much worse.   I think it was 2006 we only had about 3 half health linebackers the entire year.

    That could be it too. UGA has a handicap with our suspensions compared to other schools. We are super thin now up the middle. This is a huge blow and if it was bc he was on second team then we don’t want quitters. Hurts the team and it hurts him

    That has apparently been an issue in the past.  But that would have meant ineligible for the entire season, so it wouldn’t have been a tough decision for a senior.  Another possibility is he was looking at a prolonged suspension for the standard UGA reasons.

    freddawg I agree fred, that series of tweet by TK really lets us see that this is hurting him, he will always be a DGD IMO.

    Bulldawg Bob2 I wonder if we’ll ever learn the reason.   I saw folks on another board speculating that he was upset at being second team, but that seems very unlikely.  Quitting and dropping to a lower division is not a good path to the NFL and TK sounded like he hates to leave.

    I have not confirmed this through channels yet, but a couple of media sources are reporting that inside Tim Kimbrough has decided to leave Georgia and transfer according to his father Tim Kimbrough Sr.

    DawgLink Kirky said talking about the quarterbacks that he will play the one that gives Ga. the best chance to win. I guess that is true on all positions.

    That’s what my question was about. Can he come in missing half of the practices and jump the depth chart?

    freddawg Bulldawg Bob2  Most reports had him vying for the starting nickel CB this year and was even pushing for one of the outside CB spots on the Bama defense.

    He was a high 4-star prospect coming out of Dulles High School in the 2013 recruiting class.

    I’ve watched him play, not a lot mind you, but he is talented.

    Bulldawg Bob2 i honestly have no idea, we didnt lose a single CB from last year which was “on paper” the best in the nation. He wont have a learning curve tho since its smart and tucker

    It sounds like he didn’t have much choice if he wanted meaningful playing time in his senior season.   If that’s the case, he’ll probably drop down a level, play this year and enter the draft.

    JaxDawg  Tim is actually a good guy. I hope whatever it is that he is going through that he lands on his feet and is successful, whether that is at UGA or whether that leads him to another school.

    Bulldawg Bob2 I taking a wild guess since I’ve never watched him play, but supposedly he was competing for nickel back at Alabama.  That’s my guess.

    If … If the SEC does grant Maurice Smith a waiver to play immediately since he has been granted a release from Bama, and he does transfer to Georgia, where do you guys and gals see him fitting into the secondary? Does he vie for one of the top 3 CB spots?

    Man that’s tough, he said it’s a “family decision.” This really sucks, that’s a huge blow to a core part of a defense we need in the SEC.

    Bulldawg Bob2 JaxDawg Kimbrough apparently implied in some tweets that he’s leaving, although he didn’t want to.   “I didn’t want to do it…Believe me”

    Yea I feel you may be right Bob. Last year he had academic problems so maybe they carried over. It’s really tough, UGA has high standards

    JaxDawg  It is not a good sign that he is on leave of absence not but a week after the final exams from summer and grades are in. I don’t want to speculate, and I hope my suspensions are wrong.

    If he transfers, it’ll probably be because he was facing an extended “leave of absence” at UGA.  It is what it is, the rules at Georgia are tough.

    I’m kind of bummed about the sources close to Kimbrough saying he is transferring. That’s a big blow 🙁 we need all the pieces of the puzzle and then we hear this. Bummer, well I hope those sources are wrong. Doesn’t make sense he’d do this now

    freddawg DawgLink  I agree. We talked about that on the podcast the other night.

    The conference rule should match the NCAA rule.

    It did from 2006 to 2011, but was then changed to prevent players who have graduated but get dismissed for disciplinary reasons from transferring to an SEC program. 

    South Carolina actually proposed that the conference rule be re-amended to match the NCAA’s in 2014, but it did not get enough support and votes; so, the rule remains in effect. My best guess is, that the conference will look at the rule again when they have their meetings in January to discuss conference rules and propose changes.
