The No. 7 Georgia softball team (27-2) defeated Georgia Southern (19-9) 10-3 on a freezing Wednesday night.

Mary Wilson Avant started the night for her second time this season, pitching three scoreless innings. Lauren Mathis relieved Avant, giving up two runs, and Amanda Ablan finished the game surrendering one run, but earned the win to bring her to (2-1) on the season.

The team quickly scored two runs in the 1st inning off a double from Alysen Febrey. In the second inning, a leadoff triple from Ciara Bryan led to her eventual score bringing the lead to 3-0.

Three more runs were added on in the third inning, giving Georgia a lead of 6-0. Two base hits and a walk loaded the bases for the Bulldogs. A Jessica Morgan single drove one run in, while a wild pitch and dropped fly ball in left field brought in the other two.

Georgia held the lead throughout the remainder of the contest and closed the game out with another comfortable win.

“I think we did a good job just coming out and playing softball,” head coach Lu-Harris Champer said. Alysen did great tonight and had 3 RBIs, Justice came out and batted incredibly well, and Mary Wilson started us out excellently on the mound. Going on the road this weekend won’t be very different for us because we’re just going to play softball. We are really looking to take the positives out of every day, these girls can be upset by the outcome but what really matters is the process.”

Up next the Bulldogs will travel to Starkville to take on the No. 21 Mississippi State Bulldogs for a three-game series. The first game will start at 7 p.m. on Friday.
