1. Herd Coaching Tree – A number of tremendous coaches have worked at Marshall through the years. That includes a stellar group in the early 1990s. Jim Donnan led Marshall to a national championship and four Division 1-AA title game appearances, establishing the Thundering Herd as a powerhouse, before he left for Georgia. The baseball program was led by Billy Donovan, who would exit to become the head coach at Florida. Donovan led the Gators to back-to-back national titles in 2006 and 2007. The head baseball coach was Howie McCann, who took over prior to the 1990 campaign. He recruited a vast majority of the players for Georgia’s 1990 national title team when he was an assistant for Steve Webber. On McCann’s staff at Marshall beginning in 1992, a young David Perno. A member of the 1990 national championship team, Perno would return to Athens as an assistant coach for both Robert Sapp and Ron Polk. He was on the staff for the 2001 College World Series team, then took over as head coach and led the Bulldogs to three trips to Omaha (2004, 2006 and 2008). The athletic director at Marshall then was Lee Moon (no relation to St. Simons Island and Athens legend Moon Warwick), who had a keen eye for coaching talent.
2. Dawgs on the Links – What a summer for Georgia golfers – both legendary alums and future Bulldogs. Harris English was twice a runner up in majors, finishing second to Scottie Scheffler at both the PGA Championship and British Open. English, Brian Harman, Russell Henley and Sepp Straka all won on tour this season, and all four qualified for the final 30 spots at the Tour Championship. Meanwhile, future Bulldogs Mason Howell (Thomasville) and Hamilton Coleman (Augusta) won major USGA Championships. Howell captured the U.S. Amateur crown, earning invitations to the Masters, the U.S. Open and the British Open. He was also the medalist at the U.S. Junior Amateur, which was won by Coleman. With his victory, Coleman qualifies for the 2026 US Open. Absolutely awesome. Amazing history, so many greats to follow on tour and a great history. Iconic UGA Golf head coach Chris Haack is smiling big.
3. Like Uncle Rico (Living in ’82) – My most memorable Bulldogs season opener will always be the 1982 showdown between the 1980 national champion Georgia Bulldogs and 1981 national champion Clemson Tigers. The game was played on Labor Day night, and Sanford Stadium had no lights, so temporary lights were brought in. Adding to the drama, a broken thumb for Herschel Walker, who played sparingly with a cast. He did make for a great decoy on a tremendous reverse for a touchdown by Tron Jackson, which the refs called back due to a phantom hold. Herschel also de-cleated Dan Benish on a peel back block. The Dawgs prevailed 13-7. Four and a half days later, Kevin Butler kicked the game-winner, Herschel went for over 100 yards, and the Bulldogs picked off Steve Young six times in a thrilling 17-14 rain soaked victory over BYU Between the Hedges.
4. Kirby Conquests – Under the watch of future Hall of Fame coach Kirby Smart, the Bulldogs are 9-0 in season openers. That includes some high profile season opening victories. Standing out, the epic 10-3 victory over Clemson in Charlotte, which sparked the Bulldogs 2021 national championship run. The Bulldogs started the 2022 back to back national championship season with a 49-3 pummelling of Oregon in Atlanta. Last season, the Dogs were back at Mercedes Benz Stadium, and took down Clemson 34-3 en route to the SEC title and a College Football Playoff berth.
5. Circle of Honor – Georgia’s athletics Hall of Fame is called the Circle of Honor. Every class has been outstanding. This year’s group of three – inducted on Friday night, August 29th, is absurdly elite. Space doesn’t permit a run through of the resumes. So here is the Class of 2025 – Manuel Diaz, Jeff Wallace and Herschel Walker. Wow!
