After the 21-0 homecoming win over Kentucky in Georgia’s seventh game of the season, the Bulldogs entered bye week number two looking to get healthy as they have a number of players “banged” up and dealing with some injuries. One of the players looking to work his way back onto the field is sophomore cornerback Tyson Campbell.

Campbell has been dealing with a “turf toe” injury since the second quarter of the Arkansas State game back on September 14th, and he has been unable to play, including last weekend’s Kentucky game. But things are looking “positive” in regards to Campbell’s potential return.

Georgia Head Coach Kirby Smart stated that he was getting closer.

“Tyson feels like he’s almost back. He can run, plant, point, and drive, but the pressure, the torque it takes to hit someone and drive off it where he’s feeling someone else’s pressure, that’s what we struggled with. It’s a long, slow injury,” said Kirby. “We’ve talked to everybody across the country and there’s nothing you can do to speed that up. I don’t know… know if he’ll be back (for the Kentucky game). Last time I got to see him was during warmups and he was getting closer; so, I’ll see.”

Campbell was participating with the team in drills during the media viewing period on Tuesday, October 19th, and fast forward a week later, to last week, the news is even more positive.

Campbell was seen running and practicing with no limitations during both Monday’s and Tuesday’s media viewing period, and according to Bulldawg Illustrated Lance McCurley’s practice report from last Tuesday:

“Sophomore cornerback Tyson Campbell was running with the second team during drills sharing reps with Tyrique Stevenson (on Tuesday). Campbell looks like his old self again and should return for Florida.”

After last Tuesday’s practice, when Kirby Smart was asked what the odds of Campbell returning for Florida are, he said:

“I don’t think there’s any way I can answer that. I haven’t watched today’s practice. To put the odds on it, there’s just no way. I ask every day the medical staff, when is he going to be back just like you guys do.”

Kirby was “encouraged” with Campbell’s progress; although, he did caution that the coaching staff would only play the defensive back if he was “100%.”

“I was very encouraged today. The time off has helped, but his repetitions have helped, he got back out there,” said Kirby. “He’s very mentally… he’s into the practice. He always has a sheet of paper, he’s always watching the script, but there’s nothing like the speed of the game, but that’s important. He’ll have to be going 100 percent by next week to be able to play.”

The Bulldogs will get back to work tomorrow on Monday as they continue to prepare for the 98th Georgia-Florida game, which is set for a 3:30 p.m. EST kickoff down in Jacksonville, FL at TIAA Bank Field on Saturday, November 2nd.
